SMHAI Professionals Discussion Group

SMHAI, founded in February 2004, is dedicated to suicide and mental health related issues. We work to prevent suicidal behavior, to alleviate its effects on all who maybe affected by it. We also promote and advocate awareness and treatment in regards to mental health. Our membership is comprised of and we provide this service to:
international mental health professionals including all disciplines: psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors and therapists, and others working directly in the field.
Mental health care plays an essential and broadening role in our international societies, economies, governments, education and all individuals who care for those with mental illness.
SMHAI seeks to advance suicide research, education prevention, intervention, postvention activities, and services and mental health information, resources, research and eduction internationally.
We provide the following:
An open forum to discuss, develop and debate, the future of the mental health field, research and mental health issues, internationally. This will be done through an online discussion group, international conferences, exhibitions, open houses and etc.
The most comprehensive mental health information center and resources.
To help coordinate mental health and suicide prevention, intervention and postvention, counseling, community and international networking, and therapy - in the mental health field so as to bring about greater communication between them.
Promotion and advocation of medical insurance equality for all who need or use mental health services. Using letter writing campaigns and other means to force insurance companies to treat mental health services equal to any other medical services in which they provide coverage.
Education to the public, including the media, about mental health and suicide.
Promotion of active collaboration between professionals in all segments of mental health research, development, implementation and policy.
Improved access to information about mental health services and suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.
Encouragement of research and improved statistical development through collection and analysis of relevant outcome data from multiple collaborative mental health resources.
Publishing of such results and research papers to encourage the further development of outcome assessment measures, better treatment, and to add to the existing knowledgebase of mental health disorders.
Improvement of the supply of appropriate and complete information to all government entities, relevant international organizations, media, groups and the general public on issues of suicide and mental health.
