Reaching Across Miles And Other Barriers For The Betterment Of Suicidal Individuals And Those Who Suffer Mental Illness
This is an enormous task but we believe that together, we can make a difference.Carol Baum ~ Songs Of Healing

**There have been many advances in suicide and mental health awareness, education and prevention, through individual organizational efforts. This is to be commended and applauded.
SMHAI believes, that if all efforts are created and implemented as an organized movement, more attention will be focused on suicide and mental health related efforts.
As one large organization, overseeing the efforts of individual organizations who are partnering with us, we are able to guide, advise and assist our partners as to which goals to place heavy emphasis on, at a particular time. Work will continue on other areas but we will focus on particular issues until they are successfully completed. Then, we will move onto new issues with the same intensity while monitoring the previous issues to assure continued success. By working on the same goals and projects simultaneously, we are more efficient and effective.

As one enormous and worldwide voice, we will have the power to make the changes in which our movement so desperately needs.

Research is a very important aspect and focus of SMHAI. Continuing research is necessary to provide understanding and treatment of mental health and suicide related issues. Our research leads the organization in the necessary directions to reach our goals and objectives. SMHAI is a leader and authority in mental health and suicide research in which other organizations have come to rely upon.

We provide the most comprehensive information regarding suicide and mental health available. We strive to be the one-stop information and resouce center on the Internet. You will no longer need to search from site to site to locate what you are looking for.

After reviewing our complete web site, if you do not find the information you are looking for, please contact us and we will locate the information for you. The information will then be sent directly to the email address, or physical address via postal mail, in which you provide us. Our site is continually updated so stop back often.

SMHAI, a non-profit organization, encourages and welcomes both individual and organizational members.

    Worldwide Suicide Rates:

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated in 2002, in the year 2020 there will be approximately 1.53 million people who will die by suicide, according to current trends. Woldwide, suicide attempts will be about 10-20 times more than deaths by suicide. This is an average of one suicide every 20 seconds and every 1-2 seconds, there will be a suicide attempt.

In Europe, particularly Eastern Europe, the highest suicide rates are reported for both men and women.

The Eastern Mediterranean Region and Central Asian republics have the lowest suicide rates.

Nearly 30% of all suicides worldwide occur in India and China.

    Suicides by age globally:
    55% - age 5 to 44 years
    45% - age 45 years +

Elder suicide is increasing at the greatest rate, when the elder population is compared to the population of other age groups.

Youth suicide is increasing at the greatest rate of all age groups.

    Mental Health Basics:

The World Health Organization 2004 report states, 450 million people are affected by and suffer from mental, neurobiological or behavioral problems at any given time. In the years to come, this is expected to increase.

Of the people who seek health services, one in four has at least one undiagnosed and untreated mental, neurobiological or behavioral disorder.

Treatments are available which are cost effective. Huge barriers in most countries cause difficulties in the care and reintegration of individuals with mental health issues.
