A Note From Dr. Roerich...

Welcome to the SMHAI website! We are new on the web but offer many years of collective experience in the lives of our founders and members who embrace creating hope for the many around the world suffering from depression. We are glad that you are here because we need your help.

Hope is so important in life . . . wouldn’t you agree? As we travel down the road of life there may be temporary potholes on occasion, but our journey is made easier with the support of others along the way

We believe there is always hope, that we do not have to resign ourselves to accepting our losses from suicide, or having millions of our citizens -- many of them young -- suffering in silence because of the stigma attached to depression and other mental illnesses.

According to research in the New Freedom Commission Final Report to the President, the most effective way to reduce stigma is through personal contact with someone with a mental illness. Depression is tangible and treatable. The U.S. Air Force also effectively reduced high suicide rates among its personnel by bringing the issue out into the open and facilitating strong and widespread community participation to make mental health treatment and support a part of the norm.

Evidence-based knowledge is a powerful tool in a campaign to promote effective treatment, share personal experiences and break the silence about suicide. SMHAI was created to make a difference and become a strong and unique voice for depression and suicide prevention.

Even one voice reaching out with a message of hope is powerful enough to save a life. Imagine what all of our voices can do together.

I hope you will support us by making a donation to SMHAI today. There are many ways you can give, from becoming a member to honoring a friend or family member with a contribution to the ‘In Memory Of’ fund. If you would like to support SMHAI but wish not to join, you may do so with a donation. Please give of yourself in this noble battle to save lives.

Every contribution matters, because hope matters.

In community,

Robert Roerich, M.D.
