· Probably twice the number of reported suicides are misclassified as accidents orare unreported. · Whites complete suicide approximately twice as often as blacks. The greatest increase in the suicide rate has been among white males.· · Depression is often the main clinical symptom that precedes suicide. · There is no strong correlation between mental illness and suicide. · Suicidal thoughts are experienced by about 15 percent of the general population. ·   About 30 percent showed signs of depression during the three months before death. · Eighty percent (80%) of those who killed themselves left definite warning signs. · Average of 1 person every 17.2 minutes completes suicide. · Average of 1 old person every 1 hour 30.1 minutes. · Average of 1 young person (15-24) every 2 hours 7.1 minutes,including below 15 (324), 1 young person every 1 hour 57.9 minutes. · 4.1 male completions for each female. · Ranks 11th cause of death. More Americans kill themselves than are killed by others. · Estimated attempts: · 25 for every completion in the nation. · 764,000 annual attempts in US · 100-200:1 young, and 4:1 for elderly · 5 million living Americans have attempted to kill themselves. · 3 female attempts for each male attempt. · Suicide affects: (based on 31,000 suicides) · Each suicide intimately affects at least 6 other people. · The number of survivors grows 186,000 each year. If there is a suicide every 17minutes, than there are 6 new survivors as well. |
| Teenage Suicides | · Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teenagers. · Boys complete suicide five times more often than girls. · Females attempt suicide more often than males. · Teenage suicide rate has tripled over the past twodecades (from 4.1 per 100,000 in the 1950?s to 12.5 per 100,000in1980).
