Singer-Songwriter Carol Baum from Dell Rapids, SD has released her 1ST CD entitled, BESIDE STILL WATERS...MY JOURNEY TOWARD HEALING.
Born and raised in a suburb of Chicago, Carol met her husband Bob, a musician. After their 1st child Sharon was born they moved to the small town in South Dakota to raise their family, where they had 2 more children, Kate and Jeremy.
Carol and Bob worked with the youth of St. Mary parish for about 12 years teaching guitar and playing music at masses. It was at this time Carol and her sister-in-law Anne Baum Cutshaw teamed up and wrote 2 songs for the kids to sing. Anne provided the lyrics and Carol wrote the music. The songs are “You Are My Friend” and “Praise Him”.
“Rock and folk music have definitely been the music that strikes a chord in me.” A full spectrum of influences from Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Laura Nyro, and Joni Mitchell to the Beatles, Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull, and Steve Morse, are just a few of the artists that I have enjoyed so much.” says Carol.

Her son Jeremy had been struggling with drug and alcohol abuse since high school. Moving out on his own after graduation only seemed to exacerbate the problem. It was at Christmastime, 1998 that Carol sat down and wrote her 1st solo effort “Sorrow Speaks To Me”. It captured her dark feelings at the time about Jeremy and expressed how God reached out and helped her let go of her fears and gave her hope that Jeremy would fight this battle and return to his family. “Writing that song was a turning point in my life.” Carol says. Several months later, Jeremy did return to his family. He went through treatment and remained clean and sober for 4 months. It was during this time that the more upbeat song, “Walk In The Spirit Of The Lord” was born. It came from Carol’s love of gospel music and thanksgiving to God for answering her prayer.
About 2 weeks after his 20th birthday, on July 25th 1999, Jeremy died from suicide. The day after Jeremy’s death Carol, with the help of her husband and 2 daughters recorded the song “Sorrow speaks to me”.
After the funeral service, a friend suggested Carol record songs for a CD. She thought it might act as a catharsis. It did, and for that Carol will always be grateful to her. “I have always known the power music has on the healing of the soul.” Carol adds, “Music has been a constant in my life through many trials and tribulations.”

The other 8 songs on the CD were written in the following year. The lyrics of “Where I Learned to Fly” were written by daughter Sharon and given as a gift to Carol and Bob. “The words were so beautiful and heartfelt I just knew I had to put them to music.” “Not all of the songs were written from the perspective of my loss from suicide though.” The song “God bless us all” was written in response to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Carol feels the words speak for themselves. The song “Sundance” was written after an invitation to attend a Sundance (a 4-day ceremony of prayer and sacrifice) on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. This song is in honor of Violet Little Elk, Head of the Woman Dancers, and Carol’s niece, Charlene Vietor.
This project has taken 3 years to complete with the help of musicians, Don McCarter, bass player and friend from Kansas City, Mo., drummer, Don Baum, brother-in-law, and husband Bob, guitar player, who recorded, mixed, and mastered the project. Carol’s daughters, singer-songwriter Kate Baum Fjelstad, and Sharon Baum Crawford provide most of the beautiful harmonies that you will hear. The blending of voices is extraordinary.
It is Carol’s hope that her music might help others in their journey toward healing after loss. Not just a loss from suicide, but any kind of loss.
JEREMY BAUM “HOPE” SCHOLARSHIP FUND
$500.00 AWARD
This scholarship was established in 2000 in memory of Jeremy, who died July 25th, 1999.
The lives of the members of Jeremy’s family were changed forever when they discovered that their son and younger brother, Jeremy, had taken his own life. This tragedy was the end result of years of depression, drug use, and at-risk behavior. Jeremy was only 20 when he died. As a teenager, Jeremy excelled at all he tried, often stunning people with his ability to pick up a new hobby and surpass other’s expectations with his own unique flair. He was a star athlete and had many physical and musical talents. But somewhere in his teenage years, those who knew Jeremy were aware that there were changes taking place inside of him that they could neither control nor help, despite all they tried. Jeremy began taking drugs, most likely to mask his depression. He isolated himself from his family and the rest of society, and for several years, was a stranger to those closest to him.
Four months prior to his death, Jeremy suddenly quit using drugs. It is suspected that he was tired of living his life in the shadows of drug abuse. He was making great efforts to change his life for the better. Only a few days before he died, he was in the process of enrolling in college. Unfortunately, something within Jeremy went awry during those last days of his life, but his family would like to keep his dreams of rising from the adversity alive.
This scholarship is awarded to a Dell Rapids area graduate, a student who graduated in prior years, and students who have earned a GED or equivalent, who have financial need, and who are not normally eligible for such awards because they developed a motivation to succeed late in life or after leaving high school.
Price: $10 US Dollars each Songs Of Healing is a non-profit organization. For more information on ordering this CD, please go to Carol Baum's website at Carol Baum ~ Songs Of Healing. The email link is at the bottom of this page.
