Victims Of Suicide Memorial

~ Remember ~

When you remember me, it means that you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are. It means that you can summon me back to your mind even though countless years and miles may stand between us. It means that when we meet again you will know me. It means that even after I died, you can still see my face and hear my voice and speak to me in your heart.

By Fredrick Buechner from "Whistling in the Dark"

*The World Health Organization (WHO) calls suicide a significant public health problem.

*Global figures estimate one million people die annually by suicide.
This represents one death every 40 seconds.

*Suicide is a global concern.

*In all 105 countries providing causes of death information to the WHO, suicide is now one of the three leading causes of death among people aged 15-35 years.

*WHO estimated in 2002, in the year 2020 there will be approximately 1.53 million people who will die by suicide, according to current trends. Woldwide, suicide attempts will be about 10-20 times more than deaths by suicide. This is an average of one suicide every 20 seconds and every 1-2 seconds, there will be a suicide attempt.

*Suicides by age, globally:
55% - age 5 to 44 years
45% - age 45 years +

*Elder suicide is increasing at the greatest rate, when the elder population is compared to the population of other age groups.

"Don't judge me for how I left this world,
Remember the love I gave
A lot of grief will follow me
for the decision that I made
Changes appear in everyone's life
Some good, some bad
The one I chose for myself
made everyone very sad
But in time memories will heal the hurt of hearts
And my presence will be felt by all with an inner peace
Remember me when the sun is bright and laughter fills the air
And a moonlit night and a whisper of wind
Will tell you I am there
Don't look down on my family
Or fill their hearts with blame
For my leaving them without good-byes
They will never be the same
If I could go back in time
I'd say a last good-bye
I'd tell them to look to tomorrow
And for me.....do not cry..."

This memorial was launched on July 01, 2004.

~ The Victims Of Suicide Memorial was created, with love and compassion, as a remembrance of those who died, tragically, by suicide.

~ Each name represents a beautiful person and a life with unfulfilled potential and promises of the future.

~ All walks of life and age variations are represented, as proof, that suicide knows, absolutely, no boundaries.

~ We hope that our remembrances will bring about awareness of suicide and that each visitor will develop the desire to learn more about this epidemic and how to prevent it.

Names Of Stone

Names Of Stone
What do they tell?
Letters strung together as words
Immortalizing death?

Names of Stone
What do they reveal?
The smiles and laughter ?
Or the tears and pain endured?

Names of Stone
What do they say?
Birth dates and ending dates
Represent years of life but not the richness

Names Of Stone
What do we see?
Words to be read outloud or quietly
By the ones only on this side of life

Names of Stone
What do we feel?
Cold and hard to the touch
Those Letters do not divulge our grief

Names of Stone
Do not tell the stories
Of the lost one we mourn
Of birth and of death and the years inbetween

Names Of Stone
Some fancy, some plain
Some large, some small
But none tell the world
Of our love that goes on forever

Names Of Stone
Engraved, carved, etched and stamped
So many decisions and choices to make
To show our loved one’s resting place
Only in this world

Names of Stone
So final and ending yet no closure is found
Our hearts continue to bleed
Yet now the ‘words are etched in stone’
Now a Name In Stone

Let It Be

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking Words of Wisdom
Let it be

And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, Let it be
Let it be, Let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, Let it be

And when the night is cloudy
There's still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow
Let it be

I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, Let it be...

There will be an answer
Let it be
